Beyond Musical Creativity
Fundamentals of Modern Musicology
Only if the science of music concentrates in essence on the systematic exploration of our self-consciousness when it succeeds in performing this research programme with scientifically-objectively verifiable success only then will it truly unite with music and make the genuine knowledge of the origin, essence, and goal of music universally available.
Indeed, our self is nature-given, is inborn to man; but this does not mean automatically that everyone has discovered his self-awareness, this basis of the art of sound, and brought it to unfoldment within himself.
"Now I understand that consciousness, too, is a matter of development. A composer can comprehend these great principles only as much as his unfoldment allows."
Edvard Grieg
But
also for the full use of our intellect, our feeling and understanding, as
well as our inner sense of hearing, the development of our self-awareness
is of fundamental importance.
For it is our self-awareness, through which energy and intelligence flow to
our inner organs of cognition the energy and intelligence that is needed
to truly and authentically comprehend the work of music.
The
state of deep sleep as different from the state of restful alertness
is only an expression of the fact that our inner sense of hearing and
our intellect are insufficiently nourished.
In such a case we are absolutely ill-prepared for authentic music-listening
not to speak of music-creating from the very onset of our cognizing
faculty, since we are asleep at the very depth of musical creativity.
Therefore, we can recognize the inner flow of natural musical-creative unfoldment in pieces at best; our "musical insights" can at best consist of sounding, finite fragments from the periphery of an originally complete music.
